Imo: Okorocha mocks Ihedioha, says governor behaving like Reps member
Rochas Okorocha,
former governor of Imo State, has challenged his successor, Emeka Ihedioha, to
stop behaving like a lawmaker.
He said rather than
settle down to his responsibility of governance, Ihedioha had been setting up
committees as if he was still a member of the House of Representatives on
oversight functions.
The governor stated
this in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, yesterday.
The statement read,
“The new governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, has not started to govern
the state; looking at his activities and utterances so far.
“He has been
embarking on oversight functions as if he is still at the National Assembly
where he was, uninterruptedly, for 12 years.
“He has also been
busy setting up series of committees with at least three committees a day, and
has never done any serious thing or taken any serious step or said any serious
thing to show that he has actually taken the seat as the governor of the state.
He also seems not to have cared about asking questions.
“In the course of
doing oversight functions even as governor, he would go to one bad dredging
site which he won’t mention where it is, he would send out the photograph just
to blackmail his predecessor or he would send out the photograph of one bad
toilet they got from somewhere and said it was in the Government House. So
petty and unserious all these days.
“The former
governor left more than 1,000 verifiable projects behind for him. He has never
cared to visit any of the projects to show that he has come to work and that he
means well.
“If he could be
showing the world one bad toilet we knew they got from Owerri Office of the PDP
when landmark projects are located at various parts of the state waiting for
him to see, and know what to do with them; then he hasn’t come for service.”
Ondo: Gov., Rotimi Akeredolu sacks nine permanent
secretaries
Governor Rotimi
Akeredolu of Ondo State has reportedly ordered nine permanent secretaries in
the state civil service to go on compulsory retirement. It was gathered that
some of the affected senior civil servants were not up to the 60 years
mandatory retirement age for the civil servants while some of them also had not
spent up to 35 years in the state civil service.
It was also
gathered that some of the affected permanent secretaries had been given the
retirement letters since the beginning of the week. The action of the governor
did not go down well with some of the affected people as some of them who spoke
with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said they would challenge the
action in court.
One of them alleged
that the governor did not take the action against them in good faith, alleging
that he (the governor) showed them the way out of service untimely in order to
pave way for his ‘anointed’ candidate to succeed the current Head of Service,
Mr Toyin Akinkuotu, who was said to be going on retirement in August 2019.
He said, “He (the
governor) retired nine of us (permanent secretaries) because the governor wants
an Owo indigene to become the next state Head of Service and the person is
junior to some of us, the affected permanent secretaries. That is
unfair.”
However, a senior
civil servant in the governor’s office who craved anonymity, confirmed
the development to our correspondent. He said the governor did it in order to
appoint a trusted person in the office of the Head of Service.
“What happened is
not a new thing in government service. When Mimiko was there, he appointed an
Ondo man to be the head of service. So if Akeredolu appoints his kinsman as the
head of service, heaven will not fall; he has the exclusive power to do
it. He can appoint anyone that pleases him,” he stated.
When contacted, the
state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Yemi Olowolabi, said the
affected persons were not sacked but asked to retire voluntarily after serving
in the office for more than eight years.
Olowolabi said,
“There is an extant circular to that effect, that any permanent secretary who
has served for more than eight years could be retired either reaching
retirement age or not and the least of the affected permanent secretaries had
spent nine years in the office.
So the governor did
not give the order to favour anybody. The affected permanent secretaries were
not sacked but they were called for a meeting where they were told to retire
voluntarily.”
CAN President Ayokunle asked to resign within 7 days
The Concerned
Christian Forum of Nigeria, CCFN, has called on the National President of the
Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Samson Ayokunle, to resign his
position within seven days.
In a press
conference on Tuesday, convener of the coalition, Rev. Prince Thompson, said
the President of CAN had become a tool in the hands of politicians.
The group said the
current CAN leadership has made recent days traumatic for Christians in
Nigeria.
According to the
coalition, the faith of Christian faithful has never been so bashed in the
history of the country as it has been in that space of time courtesy of the
leadership of the body.
It, therefore,
issued Reverend Ayokunle-led executive seven days to hand over the affairs of
the association to an interim committee to run its affairs pending when a new
election will be conducted.
According to him,
“It is tragic to point out that the desecration of our faith by CAN did not
just begin in these recent days. It has been on for a while now.
“The politicisation
of Christianity began under the previous leadership of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,
who sadly became the official spokesperson for the People’s Democratic Party,
PDP, and former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Things got so ugly
that the President of CAN became an errand boy. Note, not just any errand boy
but one that was being sent to buy weapons and launder money.
“CAN’s leadership
under the current President, Reverend Supo Ayokunle, was highly anticipated to
be reformists enough to return the association to its lost glory, for it to
carry out a practically cleansing of CAN to free it of the dirt clinging to it
from wallowing in the mire with swine.
“Our hope in
Reverend Ayokunle being able to deliver CAN from the shackles of materialism
have been dashed. Beyond having our hopes dashed we are being made despondent
because his under his leadership ‘the high places were not taken away’ but they
were rather made higher. Truth is being sacrificed on individual private altars
built to glorify self.
“On top of whatever
we, at that time, accused the Pastor Oritsejafor leadership of, Reverend
Ayokunle’s tenure has visited the affliction on Christendom a thousand folds.
“Not only did he
continue to desecrate the divine mandate of the association by deploying it as
an arm of the PDP he has added the evil of hatred by actively promoting
Islamophobia.
“CAN overnight
became a vehicle for teaching believers to hate other humans that made after
the likeness of God image simply on account of their present religious
subscription.
“Even when we
differ from Muslims in terms of creeds, the solution is not to promote hatred
that can lead to crisis that would lead to the shedding of innocent blood on
both sides.
“What the spirit
led us to know is that we have a burden of evangelism to convert those that are
touched to believe in salvation through Christ Our Lord.
“We will not
convert them by launching a vitriol against them, we will not make them
appreciate the love of God by becoming abusive and criminalizing their
existence.
“Interestingly, we
will not convert them by merely talking about the gospel of salvation. Our
ability to make converts of those that are yet to know Christ is by portraying
Christlike actions that will be more convincing than hours of empty talk.
“A situation where
President of CAN has become a tool in the hands of politicians and champion for
ethnic-sectarian bigots in the country is a border that should never have been
crossed but that is precisely where Christianity in Nigeria is now camped.
“The situation is
so bad that there are so many allegations about the Reverend and his associates
have been collecting money from politicians and keeping same for personal gains
in exchange to speaking according to scripts given to them by these
politicians.
“There is no doubt
that by all standard he has failed in his responsibility as a father to all and
has allowed selfish agenda to rob him of being a channel for the flow of God’s
words.
“This is why CAN as
currently led is incapable of evangelizing through actions. The leadership
cannot even lead believers by examples because their compromises are well known
to the faithful.
“To the extent that
the first and most important thing in Christendom is to propagate the Gospel of
Christ, we categorially declare that the leadership of CAN has lost that
vision.
“It cannot even
convince Christians to follow the direction it is laying out how then can it be
a vehicle for winning more souls for the Lord and protecting the interest and
welfare of members, the same members it is even polarising along political
divide.
“We have come to
the realization that the violence to the body of Christ cannot be allowed to
continue for longer lest there will be more atheist and agnostics than
Christians by the time Reverend Ayokunle’s leadership of CAN completes its
tenure.
“The Concerned
Christian Forum of Nigeria therefore demands the immediate resignation of
Reverend Supo Ayokunle as CAN President.
“Our demand entails
that the entire CAN Executive resigns with the President to allow the
association replace them with a leadership that will chart a course that
conforms with the ideology upon which CAN was founded.
“If the rejected
CAN executive is at a loss as to why it has to go, it only needs to look to the
existence of our forum. Had CAN pursued the agenda of uniting Christians across
the various sects, denominations and persuasions, we would not have need to
form this group pressure the leaders into the doing the needful.
“We give the
Reverend Ayokunle executive seven days from today hand over the affairs of the
association to an interim committee to run its affairs pending when a new
election will be conducted.”
Kwara: Gov. Abdulrazaq reveals what he’ll do over civil servants’
political leanings, N30,000 minimum wage
The Kwara State
Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has assured civil servants in the state that
he will not witch-hunt anyone for his or her political convictions.
He gave the assurance
on Thursday in Ilorin, the state capital, during his maiden meeting with civil
servants in the state.
“We would not label
anyone. We will carry everybody along and promote a culture of transparency and
independence.
“We want Kwara to
regain its rightful place, particularly in the North where it used to be the
number one in terms of education and so on,” Abdulrazaq said.
The Governor
promised to ensure prompt payment of salaries, and also to pay the minimum wage
after due consultations with the civil servants and proper assessment of the
financial situation of the state.
“We will pay May
salary almost immediately. We want to get to a place where there are no backlog
of salary and pensions.
“We’ll discuss the
minimum wage. The intention is to pay, but we need to sit down and resolve a
few issues.
“There has been so
much plundering of the state resources, but we will rise above all that.
“We’ll ride on your
back to get things done while your welfare is taken care of,” he said.
The governor
declared that his government would strive to plug loopholes and reduce overhead
costs through prudent management of resources.
He also promised to
address the infrastructural deficit in the state and create wealth through
private enterprise.
The News Agency of
Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was attended by top party leaders led by
APC chairman, Mr Bashir Bolarinwa; Head of the Civil Service, Mrs Susan
Oluwole; permanent secretaries, directors, and other senior civil servants in
the state.
Obasanjo Failed As Civilian President, His 8yrs Tenure Was Tragedy and Calamity - Adebanjo
Ayo Adebanjo, a chieftain of Afenifere, has described former President
Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure between 1999 and and 2007 as a “tragedy and
calamity.”
Adebanjo said Obasanjo’s scorecard as a civilian president was nothing to
write home about.
He stated this in chapter 13 of the 233-page autobiography titled “Tell
it as it is” which was presented in Lagos yesterday.
In chapter 13 of the 233-paged book, titled, ‘Awolowo, Obasanjo and the
Yoruba Nation,’ Adebanjo said Obasanjo failed “woefully on all counts as
president.”
Adebanjo wrote: “The man who carried on as if he was all-in-all failed
woefully on all counts as President. His eight-year tenure (1999-2007) was a
tragedy.
“His scorecard was nothing to write home about. What did he do in eight
years? Before he came, we were buying fuel for N20 per litre, and crude oil was
$23 per barrel.
“In 2007, under his regime, we were buying fuel at N75 per litre, and
crude oil was between $65 and $75 per barrel. In the worst days of Abacha, one
dollar was over N120.”
Leadership Of Youth Wing Of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Dismisses The Comments Credited To OYC About Nwodo
The leadership of Ohanaeze Youth Wing in South South on Tuesday dismissed
comments credited to Ohanaeze Youth Congress about President General of
Ohanaeze, Chief Nnia Nwodo.
OYC, had in a statement issued on Monday accused
him of mortgaging the interest of Ndigbo.
The OYC’s statement followed its meeting held in Enugu, where it passed a
vote of no confidence on Nwodo, who they accused of sidelining other members of
the Ohanaeze National Executive Council.
Reacting, Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, Coordinator of Ohanaeze in
South-South, described the claim as baseless and false.
He claimed that those parading themselves as national leaders of the
youth wing of Ohanaeze were misleading the public.
Arthur-Ugwa said: “We were surprised that some defunct members of
Ohanaeze Youth Wing issued a statement accusing the President General of
meddling into 2019 presidential elections.
“To state the facts, the allegations are fabricated by expelled members
of the youth group at the national level to attract public sympathy; there is
no truth in the allegation.
“The President-General has been working at uniting Igbos all over the
world and recently was in Bayelsa as part of his efforts in restructuring and
repositioning Ndigbo in a restructured federation.
“Nwodo also waded into leadership crisis in Ohaneze Ndigbo Bayelsa chapter,
is this what they call politics?
“The President-General categorically said that he was not interested in
personal gains from the struggle for restructuring, so the allegation is a mere
ploy by disgruntled persons parading themselves as Ohanaeze youth leaders.
“The National Executives of Ohanaeze Youth Wing was dissolved by Ime-Obi
and National Executive Council of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 2017 and we are getting
set for elections later this month, so they are misleading the people.
“The leadership at the state levels in the South East and South South
condemn and dissociate ourselves from the statement and frown at the disrespect
to our revered elders and leaders in Ohanaeze Ndigbo, our parent body.
“We urge the errant youths to refrain from using the media to discredit
the organisation and show commitment towards building of a united front for
Ndigbo.”
Senator Shehu Reveals Senators Monthly Salaries, Kicks Against Allowances
Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna Central
Senatorial District in the National Assembly has revealed amount he and his
colleagues receive monthly as running cost.
Sani confirmed in a statement that Nigerian Senators
are earning N13.5 million monthly as running cost.
The lawmaker said the running cost was in addition
to the over N750,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances of each member
of the Senate.
He, however, kicked against payment of allowances,
saying Senators should be paid just salaries.
The statement reads, “I think what we can say is
that the running cost of a senator is N13.5 million every month.
“Though no specific instruction on what the fund
should be used for, lawmakers must provide receipts to back up their expenses
from the running costs.
“The running cost is in addition to funds earmarked
for each senator for constituency projects.
“But what I am saying is that money (N13.5 million
per month) must be receipted for what you do with it. But what you are given to
go and spend without any accountability is N750,000.00. The constituency
project itself is given on a zonal basis and almost every Senator will go with
a constituency fund of about N200 million, but it is not the cash that is given
to you. You will be told that you have N200 million with an agency of
government for which you will now submit projects equivalent to that amount.
And it is that agency of government that will go and do those projects for you.
“Now, the corruption comes when the projects are not
done and the money is taken. But right now, it is difficult to do that because
NGOs and transparency groups have come into it.
“They track every allocation made to you and where
they are being used. So, it’s becoming difficult for what used to happen in the
past to happen now. But I can tell you that I would love a situation where we
do away with running costs, constituency projects and leaves senators and
members of House of Reps with salaries.
“And also, the public should be informed that nobody
should come to any senator’s house asking for any kobo. That also would be
helpful. There are issues that we need to understand. First, I don’t believe
that members of the National or even state assemblies should be involved in
carrying out what is called constituency projects”.
“When people are elected into the National Assembly,
they should just be involved in law making, raising motions, bills and also
performing oversight functions. But we live in a society where people cannot
differentiate between the legislators and the executive. “When the people come
to you, they want you to build roads, dig boreholes, build hospitals, schools,
give money, pay school fees for them. Now, if we have a society in which people
will stop asking legislators to do those things, then there is no need (for the
allowances) But funny enough, if you are very active in the National Assembly
in making laws and you don’t embark on projects in your constituency, you
cannot in any way be appreciated by the people you are there to serve because
the electorates in United States are different from the electorates in the
United States and Africa.
“We live in an underdeveloped society with a lot of
poverty, misery and wants. What people want is for you to address those basic
fundamental issues that affects their lives. If we can be done with that, it
would be okay. Now, you are talking of bogus salaries and bogus allowances –
there are three steps you need to consider the first has to do with the fact
when you represent the people, expectations arose from your immediate and the
larger constituencies. But I agree with you that the salaries and allowances of
lawmakers should not be discreet, but what is discreet about it when you can
write to Resource and Fiscal Mobilization Commission to get everything about
what a senator earns? The only money you are not expected to account for is
your salary and the salary of a senator is about N750, 000.00 per month. The
other one, the running cost of office must be accounted for. You must provide a
receipt for every expense you make.”
Oye State House Of Assembly Extends Tenures Of LGA Caretakers
Oyo
State House of Assembly on Tuesday granted Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s
request to extend the tenure of Caretaker Committee Chairmen in the 33
Local Government Areas and the 35 Local Council Development Areas
(LCDAs) of the state by two months.
Deputy
Speaker of the House, Hon. Musa Abdulwasiu, while briefing journalists
in Ibadan, disclosed that “the decision was unanimously adopted sequel
to a formal request by Ajimobi”.
He said the tenure extension was for “two months from March to May 4, pending the conduct of the local government elections”.
He declared that the “extension was to avoid any vacuum in the administration of the local councils”.
Niger Delta Affairs Minister Reacts To APC Crises In Cross River, Denies Involvement
Minister
of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Usani, has denied speculations that his
political ambition is responsible for the crisis in the All Progressives
Congress (APC), Cross River State chapter.
The
minister made the clarification at the APC National Secretariat on
Tuesday in Abuja, while speaking with newsmen through his Aide, Mr Sam
Bassey.
“We
are all anxious to have the party moving, it is not about anybody, but
about APC in Cross River, if anybody is interested in contesting
election, he must have a platform,’’ NAN quoted him as saying.
Usani
said since his appointment as minister, the Cross River chapter of the
APC had been without an effective chairman and was collapsing because of
lack of good leadership.
Usani until his appointment, was the APC Cross River chapter chairman.
He stated said with Mr John Ochalla as acting chairman of the APC in the state, the party had no platform in the state.
The minister said that this was due to the fact Ochalla had, a “phobia for meetings’’ and was not carrying members along.
He
stressed that a politician who had phobia for meetings had no place in
politics, adding that APC Cross River needed a vibrant chairman to
achieve its desire of winning the governorship position in the 2019
elections
“We
want to win election in Cross River and we need somebody that can stand
out and lead the party in the office of the chairman to get us to
victory,’’ the minister said.
The
minister, while admitting that the Cross River chapter of the party had
crisis, said the crisis had however, been put to rest.
This, he said, followed the election of Mr Etim John, as the new chairman of the state at the party´s just concluded congress.

The National Youth League of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has
reacted to the reported defection of Prof. Jerry Gana, Tunde Adediran,
Alhaji Shehu Gabam and others from the PDP to the Social Democratic
Party, SDP.
Reacting in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary,
Zainab Al-Amin, the PDP youths said, “We the entire members of Peoples
Democratic Party National Youth League (PDPNYL) received the news of
alleged defection of some leaders of our great party including, Prof
Jerry Gana, Prof Tunde Adeniran and Alhaji Shehu Gabam to Social
Democratic Party (SDP) with great shock and sadness.
“It is our candid opinion that the least expected of people that have
had so much gains from the party is to join hands with the
indefatigable leadership of our great party led by Prince Uche Secondus
and his team of National Working Committee to rebuild the party for
greatness, reposition it and Regain every lost ground.
“While we mourn the exit of the aforementioned leaders from the
party, it is our candid belief that the PDP National Youth League will
not be broken.
“The PDPNYL shall continue to reach out to and galvanize young
Nigerians into our great party to ensure maximum support of the youths
ahead of 2019 election.
“The PDPNYL shall always liaise with the office of the National Youth

2019 Election: I Dumped PDP To SDP Because Of Impunity And Imposition - Tunde Adeniran
A
former Minister of Education, Tunde Adeniran, has explained why he left
the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with his supporters to join the
Social Democratic Party, SDP.
Adeniran also said Prof. Jerry Gana had agreed to join him in the SDP.
Both Adeniran and Gana were members of the Board of Trustees of the main opposition party before their defection to the SDP.
Adeniran was a PDP national chairmanship candidate in the December 9
convention of the party, and Prof Gana was one of his staunch
supporters.
Speaking with Punch in Abuja on Saturday, Adeniran said he decided to dump PDP because of impunity and imposition of candidates.
Adeniran said, “I have left the PDP for the SDP with my supporters . I
left because there is no internal democracy in the PDP. It may interest
you to know that Prof. Jerry Gana has also left the PDP.”
When asked if Gana would fly the presidential ticket of the SDP in 2019
as being speculated, Adeniran said, “Whoever will be the presidential
candidate will emerge from our convention.”
2019 Election: Orubebe, Oghiadomhe, Others React To The Defection From PDP To SDP Rumour
A former Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe, and a former
Chief of Staff to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Mike Oghiadomhe,
have reacted to the report of the defection of some members to the
Social Democratic Party from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Report emerged Saturday morning that the
PDP elders which also had the likes of Prof. Jerry Gana and Prof.
Adeniran have dumped the main opposition party for SDP.
The spokesperson for Orubebe, Gbenga Giwa, in a terse statement said,
“While Orubebe could not begrudge people for defecting to any party for
whatever reasons, the former minister still remained a member of the
PDP.”
Also, in a statement he personally signed and made available to
reporters, Oghiadomhe said it was wicked for anyone to associate him
with the SDP.
He said, “For the record, l was never part of any group where a decision was made to dump PDP for SDP.
“To my great party , the PDP and millions of our members , no one has
my mandate to determine or link my name to any political party without
my written consent.
“Whoever must have affiliated my name to any political party other
than the PDP does not have my mandate and this should be regarded as the
handiwork of mischief makers.
“My membership and loyalty are to the PDP alone which is my party of choice since its formation.”
