A man claiming to be a Ph.D holder has caused outrage after he defended child marriage by saying 16-year-old girls cannot be considered child brides because of "modernization", "lifestyle" and "the type of food we eat."

Mustapha Mohammad tweeted: "With the advent of modernization and the lifestyle we live, not forgetting to mention the type of food we eat these days. It will be absurd to say that a girl of 16 is a child bride. The most important thing is for the groom to have what takes mentality and economically."

His tweet was in reaction to another by a man from northern Nigeria who called on northern leaders to begin speaking against child marriages.

Web users have called Mustapha out for his statement and accused him of not being deserving of his Ph.D.

Former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark, has blasted President Muhammadu Buhari over comments that he established North-East Development Commission, NEDC, in appreciation of the region’s massive electoral support for him in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

Clark said the President has not changed his attitude, recalling his July 2, 2015 statement at the United States Institute of Peace that those who gave him five per cent votes should not expect same with those who gave him 97 per cent.

Speaking at his Asokoro residence in Abuja on Thursday, the elder statesman reminded Buhari that he is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, irrespective of party, religion or ethnic background.

Clark said the statements has explained the delay on projects in Niger Delta, including the Ogoniland clean-up and the East-West road.

The Ijaw leader said: “These statements credited to Mr President (in 2015 and presently in 2019) is politics taken to the mundane and absurdity, and very unpatriotic.

“Chapter VI, Section 130 of the 1999 Constitution states that: (1) There shall be for the Federation a President. (2) The President shall be the Head of State, the Chief Executive of the Federation and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation.

“Section 132 (4) of the 1999 Constitution states that: “For the purpose of an election to the office of President, the whole of the Federation shall be regarded as one constituency. Therefore, for Mr President to base development of the country on political patronage, is most unfair and unacceptable.”

“If the President pronounces that the signing and inauguration of the North East Development Commission is a reward for the massive votes he got in the North East, let it, therefore, be likely concluded that negligence of his Government to the development of the Niger Delta region is as a result of the people of the region choosing to vote in accordance with their conscience.

“For instance, the non-commencement of the Ogoni clean-up and other equally damaged Oil and Gas producing areas, the non- completion of the East-West Road, and other long deprived economic activities of the region is a punishment for the people of the Niger-Delta for choosing to vote according to their conscience.

“This also can be attributed to Mr President’s refusal to dialogue or execute the South-South Leaders 16 point programme.

“We strongly therefore advise Mr. President not to abandon the goose that lays the golden egg, because, it is a case Mr President telling Nigerians that if the people of the North East had not voted for him massively he would not have signed the Bill for setting up of the NEDC and inaugurated the Commission.”

In a bid to promote educational excellence in Nigeria and propel the nation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), Musa Halilu Ahmed Foundation founded by the Dujima Adamawa Alhaji Musa Halilu Ahmed, has empowered no fewer than 2000 pupils and 30 teachers of Government Model Secondary School Daura, Katsina state.

The foundation known for its charitable drive across the country in areas of education, youth development and poverty alleviation/wealth creation empowered students with materials such as school uniforms, bags, exercise books, textbooks and pens.

It also equipped the school with dozens of stationeries, public address system among others to boost educational/administrative activities of the teachers.

The altruistic act is borne out of the passion to reduce the current high number of out-of-school children in Nigeria estimated at 13.5 million by UNICEF, and to combat the menace of illiteracy in Nigeria.

The foundation have it as part of their 2019 goals to send 50 thousand out of school children back to school and provide over 200 scholarships to those willing to acquire higher education.

“We recognise that it is a big task to provide quality education for every Nigerian due to the limited allocation towards education, as such public school students and schools lack access to essential educational resources.

“We are optimistic that this programme will help to bridge knowledge inequality by providing students as well as public schools access to learning resources that aid academic excellence and enable teachers to discharge their obligatory duties seamlessly”, the Founder, Alhaji Musa Halilu Ahmed, said in a statement delivered at the ceremony.

Musa Halilu Ahmed Foundation called on well-meaning Nigerians home and abroad to contribute their quota towards nation building and invest in the education of the future leaders of Nigeria.

It added that investment in education equips children with knowledge and confidence with which they will grow up to live responsibly and productively.

The attack was said to have occurred at about 3pm around Katari village which resulted to the death of one person. 

Spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Yakubu Sabo, said the attackers kidnapped the Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Muhammad Abubakar and his daughter while his driver was shot dead. Sabo who confirmed the incident in a press statement issued in Kaduna, said two victims of the attack were rescued. 

“Today April 29, we received information through DPO Katari that at about 1530hrs, he got a distress call that Armed Men in military uniform intercepted a Land Cruiser Jeep with Reg. No 07E o4 FG and Toyota Sienna with Reg. No SLJ 465 TN at Kurmin Kare Village along Kaduna -Abuja Expressway, opened fire on the vehicles and in the process the driver of the jeep was shot dead. “While the occupants, Dr. Muhammad Abubakar who is the Chairman of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and his daughter were kidnapped. SUBEB fights illiteracy with jolly phonics.

“The occupants of the Sienna; one Alowonle Olalere and Onuka Victor both of Ibadan, Oyo State were injured and rescued to Katari Police Station.” Sabo added that the two injured victims were returning from Kano where they went to shoot a film titled ‘The Last Step’. He disclosed that combined teams of mobile policemen, Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command, Special Forces and Operations Yaki operatives were quickly mobilized to the area with a view to combing the bushes for possible rescue of the victims and arresting the criminals. 

He added that the Inspector General of Police Intelligent Response Team was also contacted for technical support in tracking the hoodlums. Ooni’s cultural ambassador advocates unity among women “At the moment, the two vehicles were recovered to the station,” he added. 

“The Commissioner of Police CP Ahmad Abdur-Rahman appeals to members of the public to support the Police with relevant information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators of this heinous act. “The Command will not be deterred in its efforts to bring crime to the barest minimum in the state. “The hoodlums are only testing our collective will and we cannot relent.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday in Daura thanked Senate members for their support and show of solidarity with the people of Katsina North senatorial district in the aftermath of the death of the Senator representing the zone, Senator Mustapha Bukar.

Receiving a delegation led by Senator Abdullahi Adamu in his country home, the President commended the legislators for identifying with the government and people of Katsina State, the Daura Emirate Council and the Bukar family, in their period of grief.

He said it was noteworthy that Senator Bukar’s colleagues have paid glowing tribute to him as a detribalized leader whose contributions may not be easily forgotten.

The President prayed that Almighty Allah will grant the soul of the departed late Madaki of Daura eternal rest and continue to comfort all who mourn.

The Senators who paid a condolence visit to the President were Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, Sen. Ali Ndume, Sen. Babajide Omoworare, Sen. Adamu Abubakar, Sen. Yusuf Yusuf, Sen. Hassan Adamu, Sen. Abu Ibrahim and Sen. Umaru Kurfi.

Bukar, the Madawakin Daura, died at age 63, in a private hospital in Abuja last Wednesday.

Bukar’s body was committed to mother earth same day at the Daura central cemetery.

Herdsmen Farmers’ Killings Has Torn Nigeria Apart – Ebonyi State, Governor Umahi Laments

 

The chairman of the South-East governors’ forum, chief David Umahi on Tuesday lamented that the increasing clashes between Fulani Herdsmen and farmers had almost torn the nation apart.

Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state made this known during an enlarged security meeting between all security chiefs, the 13 council chairmen and Herdsmen which took place at the exco-chambers government house, Abakaliki.

The governor warned that any herdsman that destroyed farmers’ crop or wounded any person will be imprisoned for one year and will pay cash for the crop, adding that same punishment would be meted out to a farmer who killed a cow.

“Any Fulaniman grazing cow at night Should be arrested immediately. And there should be no movement of cow in the night. This is our policy statement. the rule is that if you are moving from one local government to another.

“I am the chief security officer and I’m directing the security chiefs to do their work. If you see any Herdsmen moving around, he should be arrested. This security meeting is very important and I want it to be properly documented. The minutes of this meeting, I will send it to the President of Miyata-Allah to know our position.

“No cow should move around again at night. It is against the law of miyata-allah. No grazing at night. The law does not permit cow to move at night. And I have said there is no cattle grazing reserve in Ebonyi, no cattle colony. There is no colony. Those herdsmen that have being living together with our villagers should continue to live in peace and that’s our position. Some of them who have lived in Ebonyi for 38 years, you can not ask him to go.

“He is already one of us. Another thing is that anybody that kills a cow of fulani man will go to prison for one year and also pay for the cow. Any fulaniman that destroyed a farm of a farmer in Ebonyi will go to prison for one year and will pay the cost of the farm land destroyed.

“There will be prison attachment and I’m happy that the speaker of Ebonyi state house of Assembly is here and we have to put it in the law. Again, any cattle that destroyed farm land will be confiscated and the Herdsmen will go to prison for one year.

“And any person that killed a cow of Fulani Herdsman or wounds it will go to prison for one year and pay the cost of that cattle. Any person that gives wound to one another must go to prison for 5 years and if the person dies, such person will be charged for murder.

“I will like us to do this agreement so that I get the Herdsmen to sign it and all the community heads will also sign it. It will be a binding agreement between us and the Herdsmen living in Ebonyi state.

“I don’t want anybody to chase the fulani people away but we don’t want more Herdsmen in Ebonyi, they have over 120 settlement already in Ebonyi. Our land is very small and we are doing agriculture. No movement to farm land again.

“The agreement is that No grazing at night. If you kill a herdsman then you go for murder. If herdsman kills farmer, he will go for murder. If you wound any person depending on the degree of the wound, the person will go to prison for 5 to 10 years.

“So, this is the way we will live with the Herdsmen in Ebonyi. We said, no body should come with cow by leg to Ebonyi. There is no cattle road again, and we have to be extremely careful because this particular matter is trying to tear the whole nation apart”, he stressed.

Responding, the state chairman of Miyata-Allah Alahaji Ado Amudu said “thank you governor for this meeting; we accept what you said; this thing that happened yesterday, we didn’t know much about it. It was this morning that somebody told me that there is a fight between herdsmen and farmers at Ivo LGA, and I was very surprised about that.

“I have collected the Phone number of Ivo LGA chairman, so that I send my boys to go there and know what happened, if it true or not. This problem will not come to Ebonyi and I don’t know the reason of the fight in that area. If it is true, I myself will enter motor with the chairman and go there and catch those who are causing the problem. We will not like to get problem with Ebonyi”, he stated.

N19million Worth Of Illicit Drugs Concealed In Indomie Noodles' Cartons Discovered By NDLEA

The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Adamawa Command, has found illicit drugs that were concealed in noodles’ cartons in a shop in Mubi. The drugs worth about N19million.

Mr. Yakubu Kibo, the NDLEA’s state Commander who made the disclosure shortly after showing the exhibits on Thursday in Yola, said the drugs weigh about 1.31 tonnes and also have a street value of more than N19 million.

A suspect, John Ugwu, who owned the shop opposite Mubi General Hospital, was detained. After a thorough search, 183 Indomie noodles’ cartons were discovered.

The cartons were opened and they contained 1.316 tonnes of Tramadol 225 mg tablets, which were meant to be distributed across different Northern states.

The NDLEA had earlier warned Nigerians on the abuse of Tramadol and raised an alarm that the drug is being consumed mostly in the Northern part of the country. According to the drugs enforcement agency, about 2 truckloads of the drugs were intercepted in January in the South West en-route the North.

Drug abuse is quite rampant across the country and it has been an issue of concern for the government in the past few year as many more youths are taking to the street with more exposure to the usage of these illicit drugs.

Some people have even laid the blame on Nigerian celebrities as they claim that they promote the usage of these drugs in their songs and music videos.

Remember that some few weeks back, Tinsel star Lala Akindoju had come online to berate Nigerian artistes for their promotion of hard drugs in their songs and she is even more concerned on the fact that nobody is doing anything about it as it seems that everyone seems to be comfortable with such promotion.

She would not be the only Nigerian celebrity to talk against the use of hard drugs among the youth. Ace comedian, Okey Bakassi even claimed that over 70% of Nigerian entertainers use hard drugs.

According to him, the rate of drug abuse and consumption in Nigeria is alarming and what is more worrisome is the high number of Nigerian celebrities engaging in illicit drugs, which he said was bad influence on the youths.

Nigerian Army Captures A Fulani Armed Herdsman With Locally Made Pistol, Cutlass, Bullet Proof Vest

Troops of Nigerian Army on Exercise AYEM AKPATUMA while on patrol at Gidan Kiya village, Ibbi Local Government Area of Taraba State, have recovered locally made pistol with one live cartridge.

The troops also acting on a distress call immediately intervened in a violent clash between the hunters and herdsmen in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Colonel Aliyu Yusuf, for Director Army Public Relations, said the troops on patrol at Chegba village arrested a herdsman with a locally made bullet proof vest and a cutlass.

He said the herdsman has been handed over to the police for further action.

“The public especially the residents of the areas where Exercise AYEM AKPATUMA is taking place are advised to continue to cooperate with the troops by providing useful information and to report any suspected movement by individual or group to the military or law enforcement agencies in their area,” he said.

There is unrest in the Senate following the unceremonious removal of the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum, Senator Abdullahi Adamu. The incident forced a member of the Forum, Senator Ali Wakil  to dissociate himself from the removal of Adamu on Thursday.

Adamu was sacked as Chairman of Northern Senators’ Forum on Wednesday following a letter signed by the Publicity Secretary of the Forum, Dino Melaye, alleging financial misconduct.

Wakil told the Senate that the meeting of the Forum was never called to discuss the sanction or removal of anybody.

He said some of them watched in disbelief the announcement of Adamu’s removal. The lawmaker came short of saying the removal was done in bad faith.

He said: “I was not here yesterday (Wednesday) but I saw it in the papers and television when you (Deputy Senate President) announced the removal of Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the leader of the Northern Senators’ Forum.

“Your Excellency I come from the north and I am active member of the Northern Senators’ Forum. At no time have we met and put to question any of the leaders of the Northern Senators’ Forum.

“It was brought to this place and it was announced and some of our colleagues went to the Press Centre and made statements that referred to some of us as monkeys.

Trouble In Borno As Soldier Shoot His Superior 'Point Blank'

Peter Omobuwa, a corporal of the Nigerian Army, reportedly opened fire on one IF Ibiama, a captain, at Banki junction in Bama local government area of Borno State, on Sunday.

It was gathered that the officer, who suffered bullet wounds was taken to the 21 Brigade Medical Center, while the soldier was detained.

However, what transpired between the duo remains unknown at the moment.

“A junior officer with service number N/12897 open fired at the senior officer with service number 02NA/52/2588. The junior officer was disarmed and stabilised in our detention facility,” a source told TheCable.

He added that a military panel had been set up to investigate the matter, adding that findings would be made public within one week.

Sani Usman, army spokesman, could not be reached at the time of filing this report.
