A non-governmental organization, the United Arewa Youth Organisation, UAYO, has called for the resignation of the Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang.
The group said the call became necessary following the governor’s plan to sack thousands of civil servants in the state.
In a statement signed by its secretary-general, Mr. Dindam Laven, the group noted that apart from the fact that Jang had failed in his primary duty of protecting lives and property of residents, he had on several occasions been accused of not helping the peace process regarding the persistent communal and ethno-religious crisis.
UAYO observed that the Jang-led administration had defaulted in the payment of salaries to workers in the state, especially teachers, local government and judicial staff since November 2012.
“Hundreds of civil servants in the state have either lost their lives in hospitals as a result of lack of funds to pay their hospital bills or died as a result of hunger and starvation.
“On the other hand, dozens of youth have been forced to drop out of various levels of formal education, thereby breeding thugs and delinquents who are ready to cause problems in the society and are also ready to take up arms at a slightest provocation,” it said.
The group said since the governor has failed in his responsibility, he should either resign voluntarily or be forced out by a massive street protest they intend to initiate.
