A Massachusetts woman is accused of faking her own abduction in an attempt to avoid being arrested for driving drunk, police say.
Maria Brayfield, 24, of Beverly, was charged Monday with filing a false police report in connection to an incident that happened earlier that day.
Bayfield had maintained that she was abducted and locked inside the trunk of her car. But after being questioned by investigators, the 24-year-old admitted that her tale of abduction was a hoax.
Hoax: Maria Brayfield was found screaming inside the trunk of her white Ford Focus on the side of a highway
Rescue: Two passersby smashed the back of Brayfield's rear window to free her
Brayfield was discovered at around 3.30am Monday along Route 128 by two men.
The pair of Good Samaritans spotted a white Ford Focused parked on the side of the road near exit 17 in Wenham, The Eagle Tribune reported.
Believing that the vehicle was involved in an accident, the men came closer to offer help and heard a woman screaming from the back of the car.
The passersby broke the rear window and found Brayfield locked in the trunk of the hatchback.
The 24-year-old told her rescuers that she had been kidnapped by two masked men dressed in black who broke into her home, forced her to drive her car and then locked her in the back.

Web of lies: Brayfield told police two men

Police could not confirm if Brayfield had indeed been driving under the influence of alcohol.
The woman told detectives she is from ‘all over.’ She has only lived in Beverly for three months and last lived in Danvers, MyFox Boston reported.
Brayfield was arrested and is expected to be summoned to Salem District Court to face a charge of falsifying a police report.
