UNIUYO Riots: Over N100 Bus Fare or Something Else?
UNIUYO Exams and Records Unit razed down by fire
The June 12 UNIUYO students protest which was said to have been informed
by the new transportation system introduced by the institution recently
had directly and indirectly led to the death of not less than seven
people and left several properties of the university destroyed.
The university authority is of the opinion that the students had an
ulterior motive other than their disaffection with the newly introduced
N100 bus fares. The quantum of damage caused by the riots, they say,
cannot be justified by disaffection with bus fare. The targets of the
perpetrators were mainly records keeping units which the school
authority in a press release signed by the Registrar, Mrs Edak Umondak
yesterday, described as a clear effort to obliterate records of the
university.
Some of the properties destroyed include the Vice Chancellor's office,
office of the deputy VC (Academic), office of Director of planning,
council secretariat and the students' records unit were burnt down
completely. Other properties that were vandalized include the computer
service unit with several computers stolen, office of the university
librarian, university results and students' registration portal, office
of DVC (admin), office of the registrar, office of the Director of
academic affairs and several lecturers' offices.
The University authority has promised to identify the perpetrators of
the recent mayhem done on the institution and bring them to book.
