World Class

Ngige assures on improved power supply
The Vice-Chairman, Senate Committee on Power and Steel, Senator Chris Ngige, has assured that there would be improvement in power supply across the country soon.
The senator, representing Anambra Central District, gave the assurance while fielding questions from journalists in Awka on Tuesday.
According to him, the Independent Power Plant (IPP) programme being carried out by government is aimed at alleviating the suffering of Nigerians over the epileptic power supply in the country.
The senator assured that the IPP programmes would save small and medium scale industries from closing shops.
Ngige assured that Awka residents would soon begin to enjoy improved power supply with the new transmission line at Agu-Awka power station coming on stream.
He said the Agu-Awka power station, a new transmission line in Anambra, was already being test-run for the past three weeks, and would be officially commissioned soon.
“This is part of the Independent Power Plant (IPP) programme of the Federal Government on the power sector.
“What we have in Agu-Awka power station is a new transmission line under a test run and that explains why in the past three weeks major parts of the state capital have been enjoying uninterrupted power supply,’’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted Ngige as saying to journalists on Tuesday.
He said that it had helped to reduce transformers’ overloading in the state capital and improved power supply to the neighbouring communities of Nibo, Mbaukwu, Umuawulu and Amawbia towns of Awka South Local Government Area.

HORRIBLE: 11-Yr Old Girl Set Ablaze By A Nurse For Stealing Meat

World Class
Doctors at the General Hospital, Gbagada, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, are seriously battling to save the life of an 11-year old girl, Ita Bassey-Eno, who was allegedly set ablaze by the woman she lives with, Mrs Nkese Iroakazi, a nurse at a hospital in Surulere.

Iroakazi was alleged to have poured kerosene on Bassey-Eno before lighting a match stick to set her ablaze after the girl was said to have stolen a piece of meat from the pot.

Witnesses said the girl ran out of their apartment at 7, Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, unto to the main road with fire all over her body as she cried for help from passers-by to rescue her.
It was gathered that someone quickly stopped his vehicle and used his fire extinguisher to put out the flame on her body.

The incident, which occurred last Saturday, was immediately reported at the Bode Thomas Police Station and the police from the station arrested Mrs. Nkese.

The little girl was rushed to the Burns and Trauma Centre, an annex of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital at the General Hospital, Gbagada, for urgent attention as the doctors in the hospital said she had suffered 95 percent burns and would take a miracle for her to survive.

Bassey-Eno’s private part was damaged, while almost all her body is burnt. The whole of her body, except her face and her feet, are bandaged, while she wears pampers because her private part was damaged.
On her hospital bed on Monday the little was groaning in pains while health officials described Nkese as callous woman and that she must be made to face the music.

Executive Director, Esther Child Rights Foundation, ECRF, Mrs. Esther Ogwu, who was at the hospital to see the girl, wept when she saw her pathetic state, saying that in all her life as human rights activist, she had never come across such a gruesome case as that of the little girl. According to Ogwu, the situation is terrible.
The doctor said the girl suffered 95 percent burns and that her private part has been damaged. This woman is more than wicked. Justice must take its course.

“One of the health officials at the General Hospital, Gbagada called me and said a woman poured kerosene on the little girl staying with her and lit up a match stick and set her ablaze.
The girl ran out of the house to the main road where a Good Samaritan used her car fire extinguisher to put out the fire.”

Little Bassey-Eno, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, southsouth Nigeria, was brought from the village with another girl, Happiness Okon-Bassey, 13, to live with Nkese in June 2013 on the premose that she would send them to school, but that was not to be as the two girls allegedly performed the function of domestic servants for Nkese.
The second house girl, Okon-Bassey, said she did not see when her colleague was set ablaze but that she heard her screaming when their mistress was beating her shortly before the she saw flame all over her body when she ran outside their home.

She alleged that they were maltreated and beaten thoroughly very often and that they had no time to rest as they work almost throughout the day for their mistress without going to school, saying that they normally eat twice daily.

Daughter of the alleged culprit, Ijeoma Akiti, 27, said she was not at home when the incident occurred and that she could not tell whether her mother poured kerosene on the little girl’s body and set her ablaze, but that she heard such story at the police station.

She said her mother was first married to her father and later remarried into the family of Iroakazi and that her mother’s husband had gone on a business trip to the eastern part of Nigeria.
At the Bode Thomas Police Station, police sources alleged that the little girl confessed that her mistress poured kerosene on her.

The police at the station said the woman would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti for further investigation into the matter, but Ogwu alleged that the police were trying to shield the woman from prosecution.

In her statement at the police station, Iroakazi denied that she poured kerosene on the little girl’s body and set her ablaze.

According to her, she was in the sitting room when she heard a loud cry and rushed out only to see the girl on fire and called on people to help put out the fire.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA, were at the hospital and the police station where they spoke with the woman, but she denied the story.

WAPA officials took Okon-Bassey, the second girl with them for rehabilitation pending when she would be reconciled with her real mother.

Edo seals Benin Airport over tax
Business activities were on Tuesday paralysed at the Benin Airport as the Edo State Internal Revenue Services sealed up the administrative offices of the Benin Airport over non-remittance of N15m “Pay As You Earn Tax.”
The money was allegedly deducted from FAAN employees in 2011.
Passengers that arrived Benin could not leave the airport as the two gates leading to the airport were under lock and key.
Some of the passengers had to leave the airport by breaking down the barb wire that served as perimetre fencing to the place.
Cab operators were also trapped inside the airport as well as other passengers that did not want to leave through the fence.
Passengers scheduled for morning flights could not leave as flights did not depart the airport following the shut down.
Chairman of EDIRS, Chief Oseni Elemah, who led security operatives to open the airport gates, said the locking of the gates was a ploy to blackmail the state government.
He said only the offices were sealed by his officials and not the gates.

5 Interview Lessons You Can Learn From Whole Foods

World Class
By

After months of community-wide anticipation, a Whole Foods grocery store recently opened not far from the home of this author. While some around town complain about the high prices for which the chain is known, people nonetheless flock there as if they haven't eaten in a month.

If you examine Whole Foods's way of doing business, you will see that you can utilize some of the same ideas to fashion yourself as the prized candidate that hiring managers will crave. Here are five lessons that you can turn you into a first-choice pick:

1. Appearance counts. The store boasts an incredible array of goods. The shelves are always neat and full, but nothing seems ever to be out of place, and there is absolutely no sense of clutter. The ambiance of the store screams "Clean!"

Lesson: Whether or not you like it, appearance does matter. Pay attention to how others perceive your physical appearance, and the underlying message about you as a person that it conveys. You don't need to look like a model, but you do need to look professional and be at your best. Wear well-fitting professional attire, and be meticulously groomed. When you speak, get right to the point and don't ramble. Let your words and style of speech demonstrate your organized thinking.

2. Perfection is tantalizing. At Whole Foods, all the fresh fruits and vegetables are at their peak stage of ripeness and without blemishes. They make you lick your lips with anticipation.

Lesson: Employers salivate over "perfect fit" candidates. You must demonstrate your passion for the role you seek. However, your desire for a job doesn't, in and of itself, make a compelling case for you to be hired. For a short job hunt, focus your efforts on those jobs where you will be seen as possessing all the desired education, experience, abilities and qualities. These are the jobs for which you'll be seen as a truly appetizing candidate.

If you aren't the right fit now for the role you seek, think about what you can do make yourself more shine in the future. That might mean taking a stepping-stone role now, getting a certification, earning a particular degree or something else.

3. Helpfulness counts. Courteous staff members are easy to locate. They never respond to "Where is XXX located?" by saying "Look two aisles over." Instead they are trained to immediately take the initiative to cheerfully walk the customer to the precise location where the desired product is located. They understand that customizing their efforts to a customer's desire makes him or her much more likely to buy whatever product he or she had in mind.

Lesson: When your interviewer asks you a question, don't ever direct his or her attention away from you by saying, "You can find this on my résumé" and leave it at that. Every query represents an opportunity to take your interviewer where he or she wants to go: becoming convinced that you are a solid "must have" hire.

You need to listen carefully to each question so that your answer will respond to the interviewer's underlying desire rather than spitting out altogether rehearsed talking points. You can take on the role of "guide" by telling just that part of your professional story that will satisfy your interviewer's needs.

4. People value healthy products. Whole Foods appeals to health and environmentally conscious consumers by offering unadulterated, organic food. The underlying message is that consumers will be better off from using the store's products.

Lesson: When you are preparing for your interview, bear in mind that the underlying purpose of hiring anyone is to make a company's bottom line healthier. Think about ways you can contribute to make that perspective employer "better off" by saving expenses, increasing sales or improving productivity. Every contribution to the bottom line has at least one of these components, and you should be prepared to demonstrate your desire and ability to bring that value with you.

5. Top quality demands top dollar. You can often find comparable food cheaper in other stores. And, while Whole Foods does run promotions and sales, its overall pitch is more about value than price. Because its customers believe that this chain consistently provides top quality goods, the consumer can justify paying more for them.

Lesson: Remember not to get pinned down to a specific salary number until you are sure that the employer believes that you are the very best candidate. Only then can you shift the decision maker away from hiring based on cost to the company to hiring total quality and value. With this approach you are much more likely to justifying in the hiring manager's mind why you deserve to start at or near the top of the salary range.

When you bear these lessons in mind, you will surely boost your chances of getting hired and receiving a competitive compensation package. And that will be the icing on a most delectable conclusion to your job search.

Happy hunting!

She began searching the house for a boy — and was aghast when she discovered the 35-year-old skulking under the mattress.
She called cops who yesterday confirmed: “A man was arrested on suspicion of abusing a position of trust.”
A source said: “The pair had gone back to the girl’s house because they thought no one would be there.
“But the mum came home earlier than expected and caught them.
“She went into her daughter’s room and found the teacher hiding under the bed. It was a terrible shock. I think she had only come home to grab some lunch. The mum went berserk.”

Falling Nigerian Artistes: Riches to Rags Stories of 9 Nigerian Celebrities

World Class
celebrities-rich-today-poor-tomorrow
A typical Nigeria celebrity is seen as a wealthy personality. Going on tour around the world, shooting videos and making people know they are a force to be reckoned with.

Most of the shows they perform in is outside the country and it aids them with lots of money for stage appearance, multinational endorsement and more fan base. But of late, the tide has continued to turn inasmuch as majority seek fund from the public before they could even eat. The question entertainment enthusiasts are asking is, what have they been doing with the millions they earn?

The ordeal of African Queen Music producer, OJB Jezreel with kidney failure has revealed the lifestyle of our music celebrities. He struggled to get the required funds for his kidney transplant and had to resort to begging Nigerians to save his life and donate money for his operation.  This development casts a notion of wasteful spending on our celebrities who made money when the going was good.

A lot of our contemporary artistes and music producers have smiled to the bank unlike the veteran singers of yesteryears who laboured more producing quality music and yet did not make as much as the contemporary artistes. Catching on the global hip hop trend, many of our artistes have hit it off and smiled to the banks. The Nigerian musician has laboured and tried to make himself to be reckoned with. Today, while many have attained celebrity status via the industry and become brand ambassadors of different products and organisations, others have gradually faded out as if they never existed.
Flashback:

As an upcoming artiste or actor a lifestyle is created to help in championing a career, a lot is provided by a label for instance in the music industry like house, car and some cash for the particular period as agreed by the contract. But when the ‘dough’ starts coming in, the exotic lifestyle creeps in. Some spend about hundreds of millions to get a house while others spend same and above  to get ‘lambogini’ just to pose with it because of what they watch on MTV or Channel O. This is far from their initial plan of making it big and establishing themselves as an entrepreneur in the business. And it has continue to hinder a lot of people in the entertainment industry from achieving a lot like their European counterpart.
Though people like D’banj, Don Jazzy, 2face,  Omotola, the popular actors Aki and Pawpaw, Genevieve, Jim Iyke and some few others have invested in different businesses aside the usual profession, many are busy buying commodities that do not last for the future only to cry for help when they are broke.
The strugglers:

At that time,  his wife was also reported to have left him because he could no longer meet the needs of his family.

Also, at an early age, Shina Peters was one of the richest musicians in Nigeria with his platinum hit Afro juju. He was a force to be reckoned with but some of his fans said it was  mismanagement of funds that led to his not being famous.

Nigerian father of Juju music, King Sunny Ade and the northern veteran, Dan Maraya also advised young entertainers to invest their money on things that would benefit them and their family, instead of living a lavish lifestyle and later coming to seek help. Nico Gravity said in his song ‘Finish Timaya’ that he had no beef with Timaya. In an interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday, he said he just tried to advise him and other artistes to invest their money on things that would benefit them in the future instead of making noise of buying cars and travelling round the world only to start begging in the long run. He also said he would be glad if they collaborate in any song.

An insider said that the late Pa Rolling Dollar was totally broke and could not afford the basic necessities of life, though he was popular.  But succour came his way from the Lagos state governor.

Majek Fashek:

How are the mighty fallen! This exclamation best captures the current state of New York-based Majek Fashek who waltzed his way into the hearts of music fans in the early ’90s with his critically acclaimed album, Prisoner of Conscience.

All is definitely not well with the reggae icon who released a video entitled Jah Revelation. Looking from his kind of music and patronage, he is supposed to be one of the most stable artistes, but Majek has been dogged by bad publicity. After many years of turbulent sojourns, it is hoped that the rainmaker would pray the rain is sent down.

Blackface

When stories of famous entertainers who have suffered a reversal of fortunes are chronicled, the name Augustine Ahmed better known as Blackface would definitely echo and reecho. Ejected from home by landlord, deserted by wife and abandoned by friends; such is the story of Blackface, who was once a trailblazer when the raga  movement took off in Nigeria. Together with his friends, Tuface and Faze, they took the music scene by storm. While Tuface, after their inglorious disbandment continues on his astronomical rise and Faze rides on the crest of his modest fame, Blackface has remained unable to find his footings. That is after a big hit with his albums. Will he bounce back or continue to wallow in penury?

Soul E

“In the life of everyman, there must be some ups and downs, it’s just a normal thing that happens and I must tell you that I have learnt from them and all I can ask from God is that everything falls in place this time around. Most of the things I did before, I don’t do them anymore. One of the things I learnt in my trying period is to be focused on the Lord and no matter how deep down one goes, God is mighty and able to lift him back to the greatest heights.”

The above was the response of Emmanuel Okose, better known as Soul E when asked about his depreciated relevance in the Nigerian music industry. Shortly after hitting it big, especially with the tracks, Soul E Baba dey Here, In My Life, among few others, the young hip hop actor disappeared from lime-light. Since he left Colossal Entertainment Nig Ltd, to start his own record label, Soul E International Records, all has never been well, especially with his finances. His failed marriage to older lover, Queen Ure is said to have also contributed to his thin pocket. But fans have also blamed him for lack of good planning only to seek for relevance when things are sour.

Baba Fryo

The last time anything news worthy was heard of him was on August 23, 2012, when he was beaten by policemen with their baton, kicked with their boots, handcuffed and dragged like a common thief to Isashi Police Station, along Badagry Express Way. Within the period, 1999 to 2003 when he was still waxing strong in the Nigerian entertainment industry, before fame and fortunes suddenly disappeared into thin air; no police man in Nigeria could have brutalised the Afro-reggae artiste to that extent.
Friday Igweh, popularly called Baba Fryo hit stardom in 1996 with a maiden album, Denge Pose,( a kind of dance one throws his leg as if suffering from waist pain) after which he released a sequel album, Notice Me, in 1999, and Country No Send, in 2003. Within those years,he reigned supreme. But today, it seems ‘he can’t denge and pose’ again.

Marvellous Benji

Chinua Achebe’s book, “Things Fall Apart” best captures Marvellous Benji’s grace to grass fall.  Back in the days when Suo, Konto, (a dance that involves both the hands and legs simultaneously as if pulling a string)and Galala were the reigning dances in Nigeria. Marvellous Benji, whose real name is Benjamin Ukueje also reigned alongside the era. But shortly after, his name, just like the dance pattern, gradually went into limbo – a reason he is currently experiencing hard times. In 2012, he tried relaunching himself into the music industry with two singles, Iwo Ni Mofe, and My Life. Though it was a good effort, but his expectations were never met.

In an interview on his current state with LEADERSHIP Sunday, the artiste in a sober voice said he is working on a big hit in the pipeline and would let the public know when the meal is ready.

Ekwe

Sunday Osakuni, popularly known as Original Stereoman Ekwe, is no doubt among the artistes with riches to rag stories. According to the artiste whose hit song, E dey Pain Me and once a Glo Ambassador, made waves a few years back. His ordeal began after he was invited by homicide detectives, Force CID Panti, Yaba–Lagos, following an allegation that he strangled and killed his estranged wife, Rukayat Idris in April 2012. The incident, no doubt, affected the fortunes and career of the dread-locked artiste. For almost a year now, shows have eluded him. And the matter is worsened by the absence of a trending song from the Delta State-born Stereo man. We hope he will rise to fall no more.

Eddy Remedy
Eddy Ashiedu-Brown, better known as Eddy Montana, a former member of the defunct  musical group, Remedies, has had his own share of misfortunes in the nation’s entertainment industry. He seems the only unsuccessful member of the defunct Remedies. He had a messy separation from his wife, Kenny Saint Brown of Kennis Music and has not been able to resuscitate his music career since  he dropped the arrival of Eddy Remedy. His case is like the unfortunate hunter who caught a big Antelope but in a twinkle of an eye, let loose.

Daddy Fresh

The former dance-hall guru, who reigned alongside Daddy Showkey and Baba Fryo, has left the industry that once brought him fame and fortunes. His last attempt at reclaiming his lost spot on the music scene was a monumental failure and ever since, nobody knows his whereabouts musically.

Fada U-turn

The name Femi Mayomi might not ring a bell in many ears. But once Fada U-turn is mentioned, people will scream and are bound to ask, “where is him now?” This talented singer, whose hit track, Yetunde, in 1999, became a household number is today struggling with life as a result of fortunes reversal.
At the moment, he is planning to stage a comeback into the industry, especially with the recent release of his brand new single entitled Gbafun Remix, which features K-Solo. The song which was also produced by K-Solo is the first single from Fada U-turn’s forthcoming double album – Oba Shakara and Obaluaye, from the stables of Shakara sounds. We hope it would be a progressive U-turn this time around.

Way Forward:

Entertainers should know that they are public figures and  people(fans) are watching and monitoring their progression especially when they have made it big. It’s left for them to work for the future and invest in any way they can, even if it means opening a kiosk to aid them during the rainy day.

Chidi Llyod Threaten To Drag Nigerian Police to Int'l Court of Justice For Alleged Torture and Detention

World Class
PORT HARCOURT — Pro-Governor Rotimi Amaechi members of Rivers State House of Assembly, have threatened to drag the Nigerian Police to the International Court of Justice over alleged torture and continued detention of  the Leader of the House, Mr. Chidi Lloyd, claiming that he is going blind because of his continued incarceration.
A statement by the lawmakers, alleged that Mr. Llyod, who was brought into Port Harcourt last Friday amid tight security was tortured and manhandled by the Police.
The lawmakers, who questioned why the Police had to allegedly chain and blindfold their leader,  condemned the alleged actions of the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu.
Chidi Lloyd
Chidi Lloyd
They also said  Mbu should be held responsible, if anything happened to Lloyd.
Lloyd is being held for his alleged role in the attack on Mr. Micael Chinda, member representing Obia/Akpor II in the state Assembly. He has since been flown abroad for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the Police Force Headquarters, yesterday, said that it had uncovered an influx of heavy arms into Rivers State and plans to rob some banks.
In a statement by the Force Spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba,  read: “Following an extensive intelligence operation, the Rivers State Police Command in the early hours of Friday, July 26, 2013 aborted a planned robbery attack targeted at one of the leading commercial banks in the state.”
On the seized arms, he said, “the cache of weapons was recovered from three vehicles hidden at a mechanic village in Ihugbo on the East-West Road, Ahoada, Rivers State.
The weapons recovered include two General Purpose Machine Guns, GPMG with 59 rounds of GPMG ammunition; eight  AK–47 rifles with 1635 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and 57 magazines.
Others included one  G3 rifle with magazine; two  dynamites with detonators and other explosives canes; two gas cylinders with welding accessories; one sledge hammer, one axe and three vehicles in which the weapons were concealed.”
Briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, yesterday, on behalf of other lawmakers on the fate of Lloyd, Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Leyii Kwanee, said, “you all can recall that Chidi Lloyd,  who reported himself at the Force Headquarters, Abuja was sneaked into Port Harcourt on Friday and we thought he would be charged to court same day.
“As I speak to you,  we have just been informed that he is being held at the Force CID by the same police authority under Commissioner Joseph Mbu.
The Deputy Speaker said recent under-currents in the polity and Rivers State indicated that embattled Commissioner of Police,  Mbu would soon be removed from the state.
“We expect Mbu to be on his way out of Rivers State any moment from now. If you observed, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro left this arena a while ago.|”
“He has been in the state to see things for himself.” Don’t forget, the Senate has also recommended for Mbu’s removal. We expect that the decision of the Senate, the highest lawmaking body in country should be respected.”
Similarly, he said the recent reconciliatory committee on the crises in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, might not achieve much.
According to him: “You know that apart from the Chairmanship of Dickson, two members of that committee are against the government of Rotimi Amaechi. I think that committee is not intended to serve the party.”

Pope Francis refuses to condemn gay priests and says their sins should be forgiven and forgotten

World Class
The pope has said that he 'will not judge' gay priests.
Speaking to reporters on a flight back from his week-long visit to sexually permissive Brazil, Pope Francis said he ‘would not stand in judgment’ of gays in the Vatican and that they should not be discriminated against.
The pontiff's remarks about gays mark a more conciliatory approach than his predecessor. Benedict signed a document in 2005 saying that men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests.

A modern Pope? The Pope was funny and candid during a news conference that lasted almost an hour and a half, during which he did not attempt to dodge any difficult questions fielded by the reporters present

In a remarkably open press conference, Francis said that people should not be persecuted for their sexual orientation.
He said: ‘I am not going to judge. If a person is gay and of good will and seeks the Lord who am I to judge?’
‘The catechism tells us not to discriminate or marginalize against these people. They are our brothers.’

Francis was answering a question about a rumoured gay lobby in the Holy See hierarchy.
He said that gay ‘tendencies’ were not the problem for the church. The real problem was the lobbies, whether they are gay, the political or Masonic', he said.
Accepting: His statements marked a dramatic turnaround from his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, who signed a document in 2005 that said men with deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests

The remarks come as the  gay marriage debate rages around the world.
Despite the apparent softening, Francis adamantly opposes same sex marriage.
In an encyclical sent out to every parish in the Catholic world last month he wrote: The first setting in which faith enlightens the human city is the family,' Pope Francis says. 'I think first and foremost of the stable union of man and woman in marriage.
'This union is born of their love, as a sign and presence of God's own love, and of the acknowledge and acceptance of the goodness of sexual differentiation, whereby spouses can become one flesh and are enabled to give birth to a new life.'

The Pope also suggested that he wanted a greater role for women in the Church, but insisted they could not be priests. ‘That door is closed,’ he said.
But he did indicate that a solution on giving communion to the divorced is close and would be resolved in the next Synod.
The Pope arrived back in Rome on Monday after a week-long tour of Brazil - his first trip abroad as pontiff - which climaxed with a gathering of three million people on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach.

Someone holding some credit cards obscuring one of their eyes
"Hello Mr Welch. Visa Card Services here." That was the line with which my nightmare started one Sunday morning, hungover, sitting on the sofa trying to piece together the night before. The landline rang. I was surprised because I’d only given the number to about three people.

The person on the other end of the phone – Mark – told me there had been a number of fraudulent transactions on my bank account since midnight, adding up to about £1,100. I’d never heard of Visa Card Services before, but then I’d never had money stolen like this before. Maybe this is what happens?
He then confirmed the last genuine withdrawal I’d made – at the Barclays opposite Highbury & Islington station – gave me a reference number and told me to ring the number on the back of my bank card.

I did just that, quoted the reference number and spoke to someone who knew all about the supposed fraud. These cunning tricksters had apparently cloned my card at the ATM I’d used and then treated themselves to a few things in the Apple Store on Regent Street. Something didn’t ring true about the whole thing – why would someone with a stolen bank card only spend £400 in the Apple Store, for starters? But I watch enough bullshit consumer TV, the kind of thing presented by that estuary gargoyle Dominic Littlewood, to know that these things happen.

The person now helping me, Rajesh Khan in HSBC’s card protection department, had all my details; full name, date of birth and, crucially, my address. That was the clincher for me, and when he said a courier was on the way to collect my bank card for further examination, I didn’t need to tell him where I lived. I initially flinched at the idea, but when he explained it was needed to properly analyse the chip, it seemed to make sense. After all, I’d called the bank myself, this was no cold call, and he had all my details already. That’s probably the same reason I typed my PIN number into the keypad of my phone.

“It’s OK, Mr Welch, we can’t see it, but we need to perform a PIN block." “I’ve never heard of that," I said, “but fair enough." I packaged the card up as requested – wrapped up snugly in kitchen roll, packed into an envelope so it didn’t look like a bank card – and waited for the courier to arrive. Rajesh called back twice, once to say the car was five minutes away, and again to say it was outside, quoting the car’s number plate and describing the driver.

My mate Rajesh called again later that afternoon to say they’d received the card and that I’d have my money back in a few days. “Great," I thought. I recall saying to one of my housemates how difficult it was to like banks, what with them ruining the world and everything, but you couldn’t argue with efficiency like this. So sucked in to the efficiency, I went through exactly the same process the following day with my credit card. The same fraudsters had somehow hacked into my online account, got my credit card details and maxed it out. Good old Rajesh told me this time there was a shred of hope the criminals would be arrested as they’d made the mistake of buying Eurostar tickets to Paris on a specific train. The police would be waiting for them at St Pancras. Amazing news!

A few days went by and Rajesh stopped calling. Worried – by this point I was, to my estimations, about £4,000 out of pocket – I called the bank, this time from my mobile. After explaining the situation to two or three people, my nightmare stepped up a notch with the most chilling phrase of all. “But Mr Welch, your cards haven’t been reported stolen."

I’ve never been speechless before. I’ve never been able to feel the colour drain from my face either, but I was and I could. It ran from me like water down an open drain, replaced by all-consuming feelings of stupidity, anger and fear. Quite the cocktail. Realisations kept hitting me as I relayed the conversations, over and over and over. Why had I given my card to a stranger? Why had I typed my PIN into the phone? How did they know my mother’s maiden name? How did they have my address? And, most of all, why in the name of all things holy hadn’t I checked my balance to see for myself what the damage was before I even called the bank that Sunday morning?

Well, to answer the last question first, I suppose I didn’t want to see what was happening. When I did check, things were far worse than I’d expected, and my rent had bounced to cap it all off nicely. The Apple Store story was all a lie – they’d in fact spent thousands in clothes shops, some really shitty clothes shops, and best of all, treated themselves to a Dixie Fried Chicken each evening. Forget the fraud – what kind of savage spends £95 over three days in a Kentish Town takeaway?

The rest of it comes down to good faith. Once you call the number on the back of a bank card and go through security stages, you enter into a world of trust, where you’re no longer the boss and the person on the other end takes over. “My National Insurance number? Sure, stranger I’ve never spoken to before, here you go…" By now, I was really panicking. Most of the money, I must add, was credit or overdraft. What if I didn’t get a refund? That was a possibility, according to the security expert at the bank. It would take me years to pay off debt like this.

I called the police, who put me on to their dedicated fraud line. After explaining my idiocy once again – it’s pretty humbling, repeatedly telling people you’re the type of person that gives both your bank card and PIN to the first person that asks for them – they went through the likely series of events that led to this theft. By now the total was about £5,500, and even though, unofficially, the police told me the banks always refund the first-time defrauded, I was a bit of a wreck. It all started, said the police, on the Saturday night where one of this gang will have watched me take money from the cash point. That’s details of my last transaction taken care of. Sinister enough, the thought of being spied on while you’re trying to enjoy yourself at a Norton Records garage night at the Buffalo Bar, but not the worst of it. The police then believe I was followed home, which is how they got my address. It could be worse, they could’ve just stabbed me, so every cloud and all that, but followed home? Christ.

As for the call, well, credit where it’s due, it’s pretty clever. If you call a landline, it’s up to you to end the call. If the other person, the person who receives the call, puts down the receiver, it doesn’t hang up the call, meaning that when I went to find my bank card, the fraudster was still on the other end, waiting for me to pick up the phone and call ‘the bank’. As I did this, he first played a dial tone down the line, and then a ring tone, making me think it was a normal call. He will have been sitting next to the first person that called me, no doubt laughing their heads off at how stupid I’d been. Well, Mark and Rajesh, I hope you’re happy with your lives. To Hades with you.

I was right to praise the bank’s efficiency, though. They got me all my money back within 10 days, although I did have to get new bank accounts and cards. It was a pretty lean spell, and by the time I got my money back, I’d spent my last 60p on a tin of beans. My family and friends offered money, but two things; I didn’t have a bank account for them to pay money into, and with cash, well, there was a chance I had the sharp end of six grand to pay back, I didn’t need to owe out another £50 on top of that. The feeling of total financial ruin, of utter helplessness, isn’t one I’ll forget in a hurry. If I momentarily forgot what was happening, I’d remember and then start panicking all over again.

Setting up all new direct debits was an unholy pain in the arse and, five months on, problems are still arising and my credit rating has taken a serious knock, while getting the various bank departments to talk to one another and not try to charge me a few hundred quid in overdraft charges was no picnic either. I’ve since had to sign up to a number of other bank schemes and government services to add further layers of protection. I get a monthly statement of credit checks in my name, for example, so I know if these people are using the information they have on me again. It took a few weeks to stop worrying about the same people coming back to my house, too, although spending hours online researching the link between bank fraud and violent crime – virtually non-existent, it would seem – helped with that. If I’m wrong about that, I don’t want to know otherwise.

Out of everything, accepting that it had happened probably took the longest. I’m still coming to terms with it now, I think, but being a bit more suspicious isn’t a bad thing. Being paranoid, well, hopefully that’ll just wear off in time. I like to think I’m a tech savvy, culturally aware person. I read about internet security, I know about phishing and all that seemingly tedious shit we’re told about every five minutes, yet the knowledge left me when it counted and I handed over all my money like some wet-behind-the-ears yokel buying magic beans at a county fair. I’m surprised I didn’t offer to help them spend the cash as well, get the job done properly, like.

Bank fraud is a bigger problem than I had ever realised. Experts suggest one in four of us will be directly affected by bank fraud at one point or another, while millions and millions of pounds is pumped into funding departments such as the ones that sorted out my problem and insurance it took to cover the money stolen. That’s our money, paid in extortionate overdraft arrangement fees in order to finance the whole industry.

Financial fraud is often deemed a victimless crime because, ultimately, it’s only huge companies footing the bill, not individuals. Having suffered myself, the stress, upset and countless hours spent sorting it out tell me it’s anything but.

‘I Didn’t Need President’s Approval To Contest For NGF Election’ River State Governor Amaechi Boasts

GOV. AMAECHI ON BBC HARD TALK
Defiant Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has dismissed insinuations that he went against the advice of the Presidency and ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the chairmanship of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF).

He stated this while answering questions from Shaun Ley of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) programme, Hardtalk; noted for its frank and often times unsettling questions.

When asked if he told President Goodluck Jonathan, who is leader of the PDP of his ambition to re-contest for the chairmanship of the NGF, Amaechi responded “Nobody told me not to run. My assumption is that you the journalists in Britain have an association. Would the Prime Minister tell you to run or not to run for a public office? That is the kind of freedom we are looking for in NGF. So I didn’t need to go to the president and say, Mr President, I want to run for the office of the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum. I didn’t need to do that and I didn’t do that. And he, in-turn, did not come tell me that, ‘I heard you want to run’. So I ran and I didn’t see the president on the ballot. The person I saw on the ballot was Jonah Jang.”
He insisted that he defeated his Plateau State counterpart by 19 votes to 16 saying, “I didn’t say I beat him, the result was clear.”

On his suspension from the PDP and his often talked about ambition in 2015 which has been touted as the height of his infractions against the presidency, the Rivers State governor said:

“Let’s work on the assumption that I remain in PDP and let’s also assume work on the assumption that I’m running for the office of the vice president, will my leaving PDP not be an answer to your assumption? Let’s assume the president wants to run in PDP and I remain in PDP that means I have no ambition or those that are assuming I have an ambition will be making a lot of mistakes because the place to pursue that ambition will be in an alternative party. But the reason for being in PDP is because nobody can chase me out of PDP.”

The Madness of Nigeria Super Stars Over Luxury Cars

luxurycars
Nowadays, more Nigerian artistes seem to be obsessed with the desire to acquire luxury cars. Many of them have formed the habit of strolling into any car mart and splashing their hard earned money on exotic vehicles that catch their fancies, even as some people have insinuated that the money is not hard-earned in some cases.

The list of those that have caught this bug appears to be growing by the day. But top on this list is fast-rising singer, Ayo Balogun, aka Wizkid. A few weeks ago, the young man, who just clocked 23, posted a photograph of a new Porsche Panamera, which is said to cost N14.6m, on his Instagram page.
The photograph was an indication that Wizkid had bought a new car, barely 10 days after he narrowly escaped being killed in an accident on June 15, 2013.

The singer’s car, a N14m Porsche, was badly damaged in the accident, which occurred on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos.

While Wizkid was still revelling in the warmth of the reactions that greeted the posting on Instagram, his pal, Davido (real name David Adeleke), reportedly placed  an order for a 2012 model Mercedes Benz SUV, valued at N20m.

Excited by the prospect of owning yet another exotic vehicle, Davido tweeted a message on his Twitter handle, saying, “Can’t wait for my baby to land! G55 AMG! Thank u Lord! ”o
Both Wizkid and Davido seem to be absorbed in a struggle to outdo each other in a competition to acquire expensive cars. So far, the former has bought four cars, including a N6m Volkswagen Convertible and a 2012 model Hyundai Sonata, since his career kicked off on a sound note a few years ago.
Davido’s expected Mercedes Benz SUV will further swell his collection of exotic cars, which already includes a Range Rover Sport, Audi Q7, Chevrolet Camaro & Hyundai Sonata.

But fans of the two artistes are worried that they are too young to be spending so much money on expensive vehicles. Obviously irritated by the rivalry between the singers, a fan reacted in a popular blog, “Now their problem is what car to buy and how to outdo each other.”

Although it is not confirmed if Wizkid paid for the new Porsche Panamera from his pocket or it was part of an insurance deal, the young man was roundly berated by fans who felt that he had erred by not donating money to save the life of OJB Jezreel when the latter needed funds to undergo a major surgery.
Also Olamide, whose fast-paced raps in Yoruba has earned him much respect from music fans, and popular producer, Samklef, seem to have something in common: a passion for the Range Rover series.

A few weeks ago, it was rumoured that Olamide has acquired a brand new 2013 Range Rover Sport. Yet, the rapper’s fans and close associates described the story as false, saying the vehicle was a 2008 model.
While the controversy over Olamide’s car raged, a photograph showing Samklef in another Range Rover Sport (also believed to be a 2009 model) was circulated on the social media and passed off as his latest acquisition.

Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as KCee, formally made his entry to the millionaire’s club when he recently acquired two brand new exotic cars: a 2013 Range Rover (super charge) and 2013 BMW X6. A few days later, the dashing co-owner of Primetime Entertainment, Dayo Adeneye, was said to have taken delivery of a N25m Bentley Continental GT.

The boss of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, got many fans sighing and tongues possibly wagging when it was announced that he had bought a new Porsche Carrera GTS in June. The car is said to have cost him a whopping N70m!

Three-year-old girl being fought over by Cherokee Nation father who cited Indian Child Act is just 2% Cherokee

World Class
The three-year-old girl at the centre of a South Carolina adoption dispute because of her Native American history is just two percent Cherokee, it has been revealed.
Her biological mother Christy Maldonado is Hispanic and was unmarried when she got pregnant and gave birth to Veronica - since then she has worked closely with a non-Indian couple hopeful of adopting her daughter.
But when Veronica's biological father, Dusten Brown, found out he secured custody based on his Cherokee Nation ancestry and the couple who looked after the girl from birth until 19 months ago were forced to hand her over.

Yesterday it was revealed that Christy Maldonado is suing the federal government, saying a law governing the placement of Indian children is unconstitutional.
In her lawsuit, filed Wednesday in federal court in South Carolina, Christy Maldonado asks U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder for a declaration that parts of the Indian Child Welfare Act are illegal.

Those measures – which include a preference for 'other Indian families' over prospective non-Indian adoptive parents – should be nixed because the law uses race in determining with whom a child should live and therefore violates equal protection provisions, Maldonado argues.

The act was passed in 1978 to reduce the number of Indian children being removed from their homes by public and private agencies and placed with non-Indian families.

Happy family: Matt and Melanie Capobianco with their adopted daughter Veronica, who has been taken out of their custody and given to her biological father as he is Native American
Matt and Melanie Capobianco were in the delivery room when Veronica was born in Oklahoma in 2009
The law, Maldonado said in the lawsuit, was enacted with good intentions but ended up 'sweeping within it children who do not have, and would not have – but for ICWA – any connection whatsoever to any Tribe other than biology ... and irrespective of whether their sole custodial birth mothers – their only legal parents – have even a trace of Indian blood.'

Maldonado's lawsuit includes 10 unnamed plaintiffs who are also unmarried mothers of children of Indian heritage who, because of the federal law, fear the adoptions of their children won't be finalized because the prospective parents are non-Indians, according to court documents.

Maldonado's lawsuit also names the Cherokee Nation as a defendant.
Spokeswomen for both the nation and the federal government did not immediately comment on the lawsuit.

'I'm always going to be her daddy': Dusten Brown and daughter Veronica met for the first time on New Year's Eve 2011
A Charleston-area couple has been trying to adopt Maldonado's daughter since the girl's birth.
Veronica lived with Matt and Melanie Capobianco for the first two years of her life but has been with her biological father since 2011, when the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that, because of the federal law, Dusten Brown should have preference because of his Cherokee heritage.
A member of the Cherokee Nation, Brown had never met his daughter and, after the girl's non-Indian mother rebuffed his marriage proposal, played no role during the pregnancy and paid no child support after the girl was born.

But when Brown found out Veronica was going to be adopted, he objected and said the law favored the girl living with him and growing up learning tribal traditions.
The Capobiancos appealed that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled this year that federal law did not actually require that Veronica be given back to her Cherokee father.

But the ruling didn't directly award the girl to the Capobiancos, instead leaving it to South Carolina courts to decide where Veronica should end up.
Last week, the state Supreme Court ordered a family court to finalize the Capobiancos' adoption of the girl, a decision that court upheld Wednesday.

No formal transition timetable has been set. Brown is also pursuing custody of her in Oklahoma, and his parents also are seeking guardianship through the Cherokee court system
Several American Indian groups have said they plan to file their own federal lawsuit to protect Veronica's interests.

Spain Train Crash: Black Boxes Recovered By Rail Investigators

The black boxes from the high-speed train that hurtled off the tracks in north-west Spain have been recovered from the wreckage and handed to investigators, officials say.
The recorders, which register speed, distances and other data, are crucial to resolving the mystery of why the Alvia 151 shot into a tight bend in the approach to Santiago de Compostela at more than twice the approved speed.
El País reported that the driver, 52-year-old Francisco José Garzón, had received an order to reduce speed just seconds before the crash, and acknowledged it by pressing a button in the drivers' cab. It remained unclear whether he had been unable or unwilling to brake the train, which was running five minutes behind schedule.
A spokeswoman for the courts in Santiago del Compostela, María Pardo Ríos, confirmed on Friday that the train's "black boxes" had been found, but did not indicate how long the analysis would take.
Francisco Jose Garzon A newly issued photograph of an injured man, identified by El País and El Mundo as the train driver, Francisco José Garzón. Photograph: Reuters Police revised the death toll on Thursday to 78, but said the count could change as body parts were identified. Antonio del Amo, head of the Spanish national police's central forensic unit, said 78 bodies had been recovered, together with numerous body parts. He said that six of the corpses had yet to be identified.
The city's police chief, Jaime Iglesias, said the driver of the train had been under arrest since Thursday evening. But Pardo Ríos said he would not be interrogated on Friday.
Garzón was led from the scene of the tragedy with his face covered in blood. He was given nine stitches to a head wound, but was otherwise apparently unharmed.
The driver spent the night in hospital with his mother at his bedside and under police guard. Contacted by telephone by the regional newspaper, La Voz de Galicia, Garzón refused to comment beyond saying "You [can] imagine how I am."
In a recorded call to the emergency services shortly after the disaster, Garzón reportedly said: "I should have been going at 80 [km/h] and I am [sic] going at 190." He reportedly added: "Let's hope there aren't any dead."
Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, the driver of the train which derailed killing at least 80 people in Spain, and a speedometer reading he previously posted on Facebook boasting about the speeds he reached. The train driver Francisco José Garzón and a speedometer reading he previously posted on Facebook boasting about the speeds he reached. Enterprise News and Pictures Garzón reportedly tested negative for alcohol following the crash.
Colleagues described Garzón as an experienced railwayman who had worked for Spain's national rail company, Renfe, for around 30 years. He had been a driver since 2003. The company's president, Julio Gómez-Pomar Rodríguez, said Garzón, from Monforte de Lemos, also in Spain's north-west, had worked on the Ourense to Santiago stretch of the high-speed network where the accident took place for more than a year.
Garzón's position was compromised by the emergence of a photograph that he posted to his Facebook page showing his speedometer at 200km/h. It was not clear if, when the photograph was taken, he was on a stretch of the network where high speeds were permitted.
It nevertheless surprised Garzón's friends. One wrote: "You're going like the bloody clappers, lad. Brake." The driver replied: "I'm at the limit. I can't go faster, otherwise they'll fine me."
The daily El Mundo, which first published the photograph and the exchange of messages on its website, said that they had been removed from Garzón's Facebook page.
The accident took place just after the point at which one safety system gives way to another. For the first 80km after Ourense, the line is ostensibly governed by the EU-sponsored European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), which would have braked the train automatically. However, on the approach to Santiago de Compostela station the track is subject to Spain's ASFA system. This will stop a train altogether, but only if it is travelling at more than 200km an hour.
At lower speeds, warning signals are emitted. But it is left to the driver to implement them.
The train derailed just a few hundred metres beyond the cut-off point for the ERTMS, raising the question of why the system did not intervene to brake the train earlier.
El País quoted a government source as saying that, even on the stretch of the line on which the ERTMS had been installed since November 2011, it was not used. No reason was given.
According to Renfe, there were 218 passengers and five railway staff on the train involved. It is Spain's worst rail accident for more than 40 years. By late on Friday morning, 83 people were still in hospital, with 32 of them on the critical list.

(PHOTO) Aaron Hernandez NFL Star Captured With Weapon After Murder of His Co-Player Lloyed

World Class
Aaron Hernandez was seen by his own home surveillance cameras holding a large-caliber gun just minutes after the murder he allegedly orchestrated.
Prosecutors also found a spent .45 caliber shell casing in a car rented by the athlete matching five bullets found in the body of murder victim Odin Lloyd.
Those revelations, along with the surveillance photo of the former Patriots tight end below, were released by Massachusetts investigators Thursday:
Aaron Hernandez Surveillance Photo
According to a search warrant affidavit released by the Attleboro District Court:
"Aaron Hernandez is observed on the surveillance video moving the item believed to be a firearm between his hands as he passes through the living room."

"Footage shows Aaron Hernandez pass through the living room area of the residence while holding an item, identified by investigators being consistent with a firearm."
The images were taken inside his home and recovered from the 14 cameras Hernandez had throughout his $1.2 million mansion in North Attleboro, Mass.

Aaron Hernandez, prosecutors said, tampered with the cameras. Apparently not well enough, as state investigators were able to retrieve images.

The pictures helped police build a timeline of the murder of Lloyd, 27, a semi-pro football player who was found less than a mile from Hernandez's home. He was shot five times with a .45 caliber handgun.

Hours before the June 16 slaying, Hernandez texted Lloyd, saying: "I'm coming to grab that tonight. U gon b around I need dat and we could step for a little again."

Hernandez's surveillance cameras showed him leaving his home at 1:12 a.m. with two other men, who police say are Ernest Wallace, 41, and Carlos Ortiz, 27.

Wallace has been charged in connection with Lloyd's murder and Ortiz was arrested on firearms charges. Hernandez and Wallace pleaded not guilty.

It's unclear if Ortiz has entered a plea, or if Hernandez admitted the shooting, which has been rumored but not confirmed by any official documents.
At 2:09 a.m., a security camera at a gas station in Boston showed Hernandez purchasing a cigar and Bubble Yum Cotton Candy flavored gum.

Roughly 20 minutes later, the three men were seen picking up Odin Lloyd at his home, according to video recovered from Boston Police cameras.

At 3:20 a.m., the silver sedan was captured driving into an industrial park, near Hernandez's home, where Lloyd was killed, according to a search warrant:
"This vehicle entered the crime scene at 3:23 a.m. [June 17]. The time of this activity is consistent with the reports of employees at an adjacent business who heard gunshots."

The surveillance photos of Hernandez back in his home and holding what appears to be a pistol were taken at 3:33 a.m., the police document states.

Hernandez was arrested on murder and weapons charges June 26 and remains in solitary confinement at Bristol County Correctional Center in Dartmouth.
He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing August 22.
